D: Biodiversity - Diversity Of Animals Flashcards
What are vertebrates
Animals with backbones
What are invertebrates
Animals without backbones
What are distinguishing characteristics
Features that make a group or individual different form another group or individual
What are the 2 different groups animals are classified into
Vertebrates and invertebrates
Invertebrates can have ✏️ bodies or ✏️ bodies
Soft
Hard
What are the 5 groups of vertebrates
Fish Amphibians Reptiles Birds Mammals
What is the latin word for water
Aqua
What are the distinguishing characteristics of fish
Fish are aquatic vertebrates (live in water) Cold blooded Skin is covered in scales Fins for swimming Breathe with gills Lay eggs that must be in water
What are the distinguishing characteristics of amphibians
Live on land but have to return to water to reproduce
Frogs, toads and salamanders = examples
Cold-blooded
Moist skin, no hair, scales or feathers
Lay eggs in water
Eggs hatch into larvae called tadpoles which breathe with gills
Adults develop lungs and can live outside water coz they breathe air
Webbed feet
What are the distinguishing characteristics of reptiles
Live on land or in water Lizards and snakes = eg on land Turtles and crocodiles = eg in water Cold blooded Skin has scales, no hair or feathers Lay eggs with tough waterproof shells on dry land even if lives in water Lungs for breathing
What are the distinguishing characteristics of birds
Warm blooded Skin is covered in feathers Bones are lightweight and hollow 2 front limbs = wings Most use wings to fly but some cant fly - eg penguins and ostriches Lay eggs with hard waterproof shell Lungs for breathing
What are the distinguishing characteristics of mammals
Live on land or in water Humans, dogs, elephants, rabbits, bats = eg land Whales, dolphins, seals = eg water Warm blooded Hair or fur Bears = thick fur Humans = very little hair Sweat glands in their skin Born alive Lungs for breathing
What are the 2 groups of invertebrates
Arthropods
Molluscs
What is the 1 common characteristic of an invertebrate
They don’t have a backbone
And classified into phyla according to other distinguishing characteristics
Give 9 examples of arthropods
Locust Fly Spider Crab Tick Scorpion Butterflies Lobster Ant
What are the distinguishing characteristics of arthropods
Have hard outer covering (exoskeleton) Jointed legs ( legs made of different parts and a connecting joint) Bodies are divided into 3 main parts= abdomen, thorax and head Body parts are divided into segments Main classes: -insects (locusts and flies) - arachnids (spiders and ticks) - crustaceans (crabs and crayfish)
What does antennae mean
Feelers used for sensing the environment
What does cephalothorax mean
A body part that is a head and a thorax combined into one
What are the distinguishing characteristics of the main classes of arthropods
Main difference is the number of body divisions, the number of legs and the number of antennae
INSECTS- Praying Mantis
- abdomen
- thorax
- head
- 1 pair of antennae
- 6 legs
ARACHNIDS- Spider
- no antennae
- cephalothorax
- 8 legs
- abdomen
CRUSTACEANS- Crayfish
- 2 pairs of antennae
- abdomen
- 10 legs
- cephalothorax
What are the distinguishing characteristics of molluscs
Have soft bodies covered by a shell Bodies divided into head, muscular foot and visceral hump No legs, move with muscular foot Snails, oysters and mussels = eg Tentacles for sensing
