What was the prague spring
It was when people in czechoslovakia began to campaign for more freedom and reform. In 1968 Novotny was replaced by a new communist leader who was called Dubcek, he wanted a different type of communism, he called it “ communism with a human face”
What were Dubcek’s main reforms
Freedom of speech in newspapers
Less centralised economic control
Increase trade with foreign countries
More freedom to travel abroad
Reduce the powers of the secret police
What was the soviets response
Unfortunately in moscow they did not like his ideas, Brezhnev, the new communist leader was completely against it, he thought that the reforms would spread to other eastern countries and become a revolution against communism.
He sent in 400,000 troops to crush the Prague spring
Dubcek was summoned to moscow and was ordered to call an end to the Prague spring.
What is the Brezhnev doctrine
It is the idea that communist countries need to act together to prevent other communist countries changing to capitalism
