Cytokines Flashcards
Which cytokines have roles in both the adaptive and innate immunity?
IL-6, IL-17, IL-10, INF-gamma, TGF-beta
What cytokines are involved in the acute phase response?
IL-6 (main one), IL-1, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma
What cytokines are involved with natural killer and T-cell proliferation in innate immunity?
IL-15 and IL-15
Where is TNF derived from and what effects do they have?
Formed from macrophages and T-cells; Target endothelial cells, neutrophil activation, apoptosis, etc.
Where is IL-1 derived from and what function does it have?
Formed from macrophages, endothelial cells, some epithelial cells; Target and effects include endothelial cell activation of inflammation, fever
Where is IFN-gamma derived from and what targets/effect does it have within the INNATE immunity?
Derived from NK cells and T-lymphocytes; Causes activation of macrophages and stimulation of some antibody response
Where is IL-6 derived from and what targets/effect does it have?
Macrophages, endothelial cells; Targets liver for synthesis of acute phase proteins as well as B cells for proliferation of anti-body producing cells
What are some of the prime cytokines of the adaptive immunity? (7)
IL-2, IFN-gamma, IL-4, IL-5, IL-17, IL-22, TGF-B
*=in both adaptive and innate
What is the role of IL-3?
Supports the growth of multilineage bone marrow cells. Produced mainly by T-lymphocytes
What is the role of Colony-stimulating factors?
Promote production of colonies of the different leukocytes in the bone marrow and enhance their activity
What is the role of IL-7?
Has a role in the survival and proliferation of immature B-lymphocyte and T-lymphocyte precursors? Produced mainly by fibroblasts and bone marrow cells
What is the role of TGF-B in adaptive immunity?
inhibition of T-cell activation; differentiation of regulatory T-cells (produced by CD4 cells and many other cell types)
Generally, what types of cells produce the cytokines within the adaptive immunity?
Mostly CD4 cells. This also includes T cells, mast cells, CD8
