Cytokines Flashcards
IL-1
secreted by macrophages; FEVER (endogenous pyrogen)
IL-2
secreted by Th1 cells; stimulates growth of T cells (CD8+ activation)
IL-3
secreted by T cells; stimulates bone marrow growth
IL-4
secreted by Th2 cells; promotes B cell growth and class switching to IgE; induces differentiation of T cells –> Th2 cells (humoral immunity)
IL-5
secreted by Th2 cells; promotes B cell growth and class switching to IgA; stimulates production and activation of eosinophils
IL-6
secreted by macrophages and Th cells; stimulates production of acute phase proteins
IL-8
secreted by macrophages; promotes chemotaxis for neutrophils
IL-10
secreted by Th2 cells and regulatory T cells; atTENuates inflammatory response
IL-12
secreted by macrophages; induces differentiation of T cells –> Th1 cells (cell mediated immunity); activates NK cells
TNF-alpha
secreted by macrophages; mediates septic shock, activates endothelium, leukocytes recruitment, vascular leak
IFN-gamma
secreted by Th1 cells; activates macrophages and has anti-viral and anti-tumor properties (activates Th1 and inhibits Th2)
Which cytokines are helpful in formation/maintenance of granulomas?
IFN-gamma activates macrophages; TNF-alpha induces and maintains; on anti-TNF alpha meds (infliximab) can lead to disseminated TB
