Cytokines Flashcards
What is autocrine action?
a cytokine binds to a receptor located on the same cell that produced it
What is paracrine action?
a cytokine binds to a receptor found on a nearby cell
What is endocrine action?
a cytokine binds to a receptor found on a cell located in a distant part of the body
What are the actions of cytokines?
- pleiotropic action
- redundancy
- synergistic action
- antagonistic action
- cascade action
What is pleiotropic action?
a cytokine has different effects on different target cells
What is redundancy?
two or more cytokines exert the same biological effect on the same cell
What is synergistic action?
the effect of two cytokines on a cell is greater than the additive effect of individual cytokines
What is antagonistic action?
action of one cytokine inhibits the effects of another cytokine
What is cascade action?
action of a cytokine leads to induction of one or more cytokines which in turn induce production of other cytokines
What are the functions of chemokines?
- regulation of leukocyte migration during homeostasis and inflammation
- wound healing
- development of blood vessels (angiogenesis)
- development of brain and heart tissue
What induces chemokine secretion during inflammation?
TNF - alpha
