Why was the initial response so poor?
The military Junta did not want foreign ppl coming to the country and destabilising their political oppression. Tried to provide aid themselves but did not have the resources. Asked UN for help 6 days after event. A week later (9th May) they allowed foreign aid in but no foreign workers. 23rd May (3 weeks later) foreign aid workers allowed in.
What did Italy do?
Italian flights allowed to enter from 7th of May to bring food.
What did Bangladesh do?
Sent emergency aid and aid workers used to dealing w/ cyclones.
What did India do?
Indian navy and air force supplied 140 tonnes of tents, blankets and medicine. 8th of May sent 50 medical personnel and set up 2 mini hospitals.
What did Thailand do?
Sent $100,000 in supplies including 30 tonnes of medical supplies and 12 tonnes of food supplies from Thai Red Cross.
What did the UK do?
Gave £17 mil in aid and sent an international relief team to help w/ co-ordination of international relief effort
What did the US do?
Donated $41,169,769 in the relief effort and help from American Red Cross.

The tropical system dev.ed from a low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal during the last week of April.

135 mph on May 2nd 2008
When did it make landfall in Myanmar?
2nd May. It moved along the coast which prevented it from being weakened.
