What does SMP stand for?
Shoreline Management Plan
How are SMPs devised?
Devised for each sediment cell in England and Wales. Based on the theory they are closed systems and treats them as such even though they are not in practice.
What does an SMP work w/ in the area and aim to do?
Identifies natural processes, human activities and management policies and presents a policy framework to address risks to ppl and the developed, historic and natural environment in a sustainable manner.
Identifies most sustainable appr. to managing flooding and coastal erosion risks.
Who creates and plans SMPs?
Coastal groups and local ppl, often part of local council. Sometimes work w/ Environmental Agency.
What are the 4 options considered for SMPs?
- Advance the line
- Hold the line
- Managed retreat
- Do nothing
What does advance the line appr. aim to do?
Advance coastline from current position.
What does hold the line appr. aim to do?
Try to keep shoreline in current position.
What does managed retreat appr. aim to do?
Deliberately allow parts of coastline to be eroded and flood to protect other areas.
What does do nothing appr. aim to do?
Allow natural processes to act on coastline.
