Cycles Flashcards
evaporation
liquid water from large bodies of water that evaporates into water vapor / water to gas
transpiration
moisture escaping from leaves of plants into the atmosphere
condensation
water vapor in the atmosphere ‘condenses’ into clouds when temperature is correct
precipitation
water in the atmosphere, when heavy enough, falls back down to the ground in the form of water or snow
groundwater/run-off
water in the ground/soil makes its way back to the bodies of water
what is the formula to fix nitrogen gas? (through nitrogen fixing bacteria)
Waste → NH3 (Ammonia) + Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria → NO3 (Nitrates)
what is the formula to fix nitrogen gas? (through lightning)
N2 (Nitrogen gas) + O2 (Oxygen) → NO3
what is the formula to DE-nitrify nitrates back into nitrogen gas?
Denitrifying Bacteria + NO3 (Nitrates) → NO2 (Nitrites) → N2 (Nitrogen gas)
eutrophication
the excess amount of nitrates, typically through fertilizers, in a body of water which increase the rate of which phytoplankton grows / algae blooms(causes living things underwater to die)
water cycle / hydrologic cycle
water evaporates or is transpired into vapor, re-condenses into water, is brought down to the soil/ground through precipitation, carried back into oceans/bodies of water through run-off or groundwater
what is the formula for photosynthesis?
CO2 (carbon dioxide) + H2O (water) + energy from the sun → sugars + O2 (oxygen)
what is the formula for cellular/animal respiration?
O2 + sugars → CO2 + H2O
