Modem (modulator-demodulator):
Hardware that turns digital data of a computer into electrical signals to be transmitted over wires or cables to another computer.
Router:
A networking device that directs traffic (data packets) between computer networks (can be wired or wireless).
Internet Service Provider (ISP):
A company that offers internet access to the public.
Internet Protocol Address (IP) Address:
A unique number that identifies a connection to the internet or an internal network and is used to deliver packets across the network.
Domain Name:
A unique internet identifier registered to an entity.
Client:
A piece of hardware or software that accesses a service made available by a server (laptop at home connecting to Google.com over the internet).
Server:
(aka “the cloud”): A computer program or device that provides functionality for other programs or devices called clients (Google.com
web page server).
Peer to Peer (P2P) Network:
In a P2P network, the “peers” are computer systems which are connected to each other via the internet utilizing specialized software.
Media Access Control (MAC) Address:
A unique identifier assigned to the network interface card of an electronic device that is used for a network address for Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This identifies the device on the network.
