CVS Therapeutics Flashcards
What are two nitrate/nitrite antianginal drugs?
Nitroglycerin, and Amyl nitrate
How do nitrates work as an antianginal?
Metabolized into nitric oxide and increase cGMP to vasodilate
What are three Calcium channel blockers used as antianginal drugs?
Verapamil, Nifedipine, and Diltiazem
What is the mechanism of action of calcium channel blockers?
They block contraction of smooth and cardiac muscle, thereby reducing oxygen demand
What is a side effect of Ca++ channel blockers?
cardiac depression and bradycardia (can cause heart failure)
What are two β-blockers used as antianginal drugs?
Propranolol and Atemolol
What is the mechanism of action of β-blockers?
they reduce cardiac efforts thereby reducing oxygen requirements
What are statins, vibrates, bile acid-binding agents, and intestinal sterol inhibitors used for?
Controlling/managing Lipid and cholesterol levels
Name three statin drugs.
Lovastatin, Atorvastatin, and Simvastatin
How do statin drugs work?
They competitively inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, which synthesizes cholesterol
What are two side effects to be concerned about with statin drugs?
liver damage, and skeletal muscle weakness
What kind of cholesterol lowering drug is Fenobrate?
A fibrate
How do Fibrates work?
they increase lipolysis in the liver and muscles
How does Niacin change lipid/cholesterol levels?
it decreases triglycerides and LDL
What kind of cholesterol/lipid lowering drug is Cholesteramine?
a Bil acid-binding agent
