CVS MICROBIOLOGY Flashcards
Infective endocarditis?
Inflammation of endocardium that lines the surface of cardiac valves; usually due to bacterial infection
What villains is the most common overall cause of endocarditis?
Streptococcus viridans
Seen in previously damaged valves chronic rheumatic heart disease ad mitral valve prolapse
Results in small vegetation that do not destroy the valve
Subacute endocarditis
______________The most common cause in IV drug abuser
Staphylococcus aureus
Staph aureus most commonly infect ______
Normal valve and high virulent organism
____________ is associated with endocarditis in patient with underlying colorectal carcinoma
Steptococcus bovis
___________organisms are associated with endocarditis with negative blood cultures
HACEK (Haemophilus, Actinobacillus, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, Kingella
What are the Clincial features of bacterial endocarditis
Fever - due to bacteremia
Murmur - due to vegetations on heart valves
Jane way lesions ( erythematous non tender lesion on palms and soles
Anemia of chronic disease - due to chronic inflammation
Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis
Sterile vegetation’s arise in association with hypercoaguable state or underlying adenocarcinoma. Resulting in mitral regurgitation
Libyan Sacks endocarditis is due to
Sterile vegetations arise from SLE resulting in mitral regurgitation
