CVS Formative Flashcards
Why might a MRI of lumbar spine be performed on assessing Marfan?
Pelvic MRI may show Dural ectasia which is a major feature in the Ghent criteria for diagnosing marfans
Why might a chest X ray be performed on someone with suspected Marfans?
A chest X-ray may show apical blebs which are a sign of Marfan (due to the tall structure)
Why is an echocardiogram performed to diagnose Marfans?
An echo will show aortic root diameter of sinus of Valsalva which is mandatory in Marfan diagnosis
Give 2 possible findings on physical examination of a mitral regurgitation.
Pan systolic murmur
Best heard at the apex and radiates to the axilla
Best heard on expiration
Give two findings on clinical examination of someone with aortic stenosis.
Best heard right parasternal 2nd intercostal space
Radiates to the carotid
May be associated with slow rising uptake in pulse waveform (pulse is low volume slowly rising)
On physical examination, what cam differentiate between aortic stenosis and aortic sclerosis?
Aortic sclerosis doesn’t radiate to the carotid
