CVS embryology Flashcards
What are the first arteries to appear as an embryo?
Right and left primitive aortae
How is the aortic sac formed?
Fusion of the 2 ventral aortae
What week of embryological development does the aortic arches form?
Week 4 and 5
How many aortic arches are there?
6 pairs
What is vasculogenesis?
Formation of new blood vessels during embryogenesis
What does the 3rd aortic arch become?
Common carotid artery
What does the 4th right aortic arch become?
Right subclavian artery
What does the 4th left aortic arch become?
Aortic arch
What does the 6th right aortic arch become?
Right pulmonary artery
What does the 6th left aortic arch become?
Left pulmonary artery and ductus arteriosus
Name 4 aortic arch abnormalities
- Anomalous origin or right subclavian artery
- Double aortic arch
- Patent ductus arteriosus
- Coarctation of aorta
What do vitelline vessels supply, and what do they become?
Supply yolk sac and they become adult gut vessels
What do umbilical vessels supply, and what do they become?
Supply placenta become internal iliac
What do cardinal vessels supply, and what do they become?
Supply rest of body become IVC and SVC
When does the lymphatic system develop?
End of 6th week
How does the thoracic duct develop?
Develops from 2 vessels to anterior to the aorta
What 3 features of a foetus allows for foetal shunt?
Ductus venosus
Foramen ovale
Ductus arteriosus
What is the role of ductus venosus?
Shunts blood in left umbilical vein directly into IVC, to allow blood to bypass the liver
What is the role of ductus arteriosus?
Shunts blood from right ventricle and pulmonary arteries to the aorta, to allow blood to bypass the lungs
What does the ductus venosus become?
Ligamentum venosus of the liver
What does the foramen ovale become?
Fossa ovalis
What does the ductus arteriosus become?
Ligamentum arteriosum between the left pulmonary artery and the aorta
What does the umbilical arteries become?
Medial umbilical ligaments of the anterior abdominal wall
