Literary criticism refers to
Methods of studying the gospels as unified literary works, rattan than dissecting them into oral traditions
Narrative criticism
To focus on the literary nature of the text, how it functions to produce these desired effect on the reader
Real author
Historical person who wrote the gospel
Implied author
Literary version of the author as discerned in the text
Narrator
The voice we hear telling the story
Omnipresence and omnipotent
Narrative world
Universe of the implied author which the story takes place
Evaluative point of view
Beliefs and values the reader is expected to have in order the judge the events and characters
Real readers
Actual reader of the text
Implied reader
Imaginary person who responds appropriately to the strategy

Causation- relationship of one scene to another
conflict - characters face opposition of some kind, must work resolution
Basic conflict of leaders and disciples
Matt- negative pic of leaders
Luke- Jesus social with them
Mark- negative pic of disciples
Luke- understanding
Resolution in gospels
Luke- resurrection then ascension to heaven
Matt- resurrection but presence given to disciples that he’s still there
Mark- only announces that he’s risen
Story time
The passage of time in the narrative world
Slows down during last week of Jesus life
Narrative time
Manner n which story time was narrated, order or speed
Characters
Action now and interactions carry the narrative forward
Characterization
Manner in which characters are portrayed by reader
Traits by telling or showing
Round characters
Complex and unpredictable
