CVA Flashcards
what % of stroke are ischemic?
80%
major cause of death in first 5 years after CVA
cardiac disease
etiology of ischemic stroke
Carotid atherosclerotic disease with artery-to-artery thromboembolism
how does aspirin prevent stroke?
aspirin inhibits thromboxin A, which prevents platelet aggregation
hemiparesis affecting the leg > arm
anterior cerebral artery CVA-frontal and parietal
hemiparesis affecting arm and face > leg
middle cerebral artery- frontal, temporal, and parietal
homonymous hemaniopsia results from
posterior cerebral blockage-occipital
monocular loss of vision, first sign of a TIA is known as
Carotid-Amaurosis Fugax
stroke symptoms of the face and body and part of brain affected
Right sided stroke will show right sided symptoms on the face (ipsilateral) and contralateral on the body

tests when you suspect a CVA
- carotid US
- EKG
- transthoracic US, if normal possibly f/u w/TEE to rule out endocarditis
standard and best imaging for a CVA
- acute care CT
- best option would be an MRI after a day
In medically fit patients with nondisabling stroke, carotid endarterectomy is indicated for stenosis of
> 70% on side ipsilateral to stroke
medical therapy is indicated for pts w/stenosis
50%
when to use TPA?
within 3 hours of ischemic stroke
