A
  • previously tended to be removed from everyday life now it focused on everyday life
  • wanted to be understood by everyone and they tried to depict society in a new way called ‘Neue Sachlichkeit’
  • George Grosz, veteran and painted disabled war veterans struggling showing no control over their life
  • Otto dix- tried to show the uglier side of life

  • the new approach was very different form the pre war elaborative and decorative style of Germany
  • Bauhaus movement(architects who designed new things)
  • basic shapes and colors
  • development of new buildings and bold designs

What was the period 1924-29 like for cinema in Germany ?

A

It was a golden age
- film: Metroplosis was released which was the most technically advanced film for the time
- The film the cabinet of Dr Caligari was a horror film but it’s underlying message was anti war and anti military

What was this period like for literature? Think for both right and left

A

This period saw both right and left writers
- on the political right, highly critical of German democracy and glorified the First World War
- on the left, very anti war such as all quiet on the western front which depicts the horrors of war and was turned into a successful film.

What was this period like for theatre ?

A

New emergence of operas and plays
- zeittheater and Zeitooer which are theaters and operas and featured greater realism
- in one opera called the salesman of Berlin, street sweepers sweep away the worst features of 1918 money, a steel helmet representing Germany’s defeated army and a body of the man who wore it repressing old Germany
