Why where there uprising in Germany from 1919-23 ?
- radical changes to the government had occurred
- people felt democracy had been imposed on them
- consequences of the war such as the treaty of Versailles and article 231 caused unrest in Germany
- beggin to experience hyper inflation
What was the threat from the left ?
-After the Bolshevik revolution in Russia in 1917 many hoped Germany would follow suite and become communist
- due to fear of revolution Ebert made a deal with the new army leader to support the government from revolution
- it meant it relied on the army for power which some didn’t like
When and what was the Spartacist uprising?
-January 1919 although they had been around since late 1918
- communists attempted to overthrow the Weimar government
What happened to the spartacists? What happened after ?
-They where no match for the German army’s Freikorps
-Both leaders of the uprising where captured and killed
- in march another uprising form the communists but it was dealt with very violently killing 1,000 people which was a deterrent for future uprisings
When, what and why was the Kapp putsch?
- march 1920
- right wing freikorps lead by Wolfgang Kapp (a politician) they tried to seize Berlin and form a new right wing government
- why: the freikorps got disbanded which made them rather angry
What where the motives of the Kapp Putsch ?
- overthrow the government and form a new right wing government
- they stressed the severity of the treaty of Versailles, communist threat and dolchstoss
Why did the Kapp putsch not succeed?
- Ebert called for the people of Berlin to not support them and strike
- most people follows the government so due to little support it failed
What where some further uprising ?
- a week after Kapp Putsch a communist uprising happened
- dealt with brutally and hunt deeds where killed
- over the next two years similar events happened for both right and left
