• people felt democracy had been imposed on them
• consequences of the war such as the treaty of Versailles and article 231 caused unrest in Germany
• beggin to experience hyper inflation

-After the Bolshevik revolution in Russia in 1917 many hoped Germany would follow suite and become communist
- due to fear of revolution Ebert made a deal with the new army leader to support the government from revolution
- it meant it relied on the army for power which some didn’t like
