Q

WHAT CAN A COACH DO?

A

You have a new manager with no experience now charged with running a team

How do you manage your time, competing priorities
Performance reviews
Back-to-back meetings - literally no time
How do you have time to offer direction to your team

Managers were offered a chance to receive BetterUp
Very easily match with a virtual coach and schedule time with them. These are people who are ICF certified and whose sole job is to coach executives and leaders
They can send resources (podcasts about delegation) techniques, check-ins, and your coach keeps you accountable, take care of yourself so you can take care of your team - open communication, inspiring your team, how to make your team members feel recognized,

You have to work backward from what makes people thrive at work, what energizes them, inspires them, helps them pivot through a big change, what they need, and what makes them STAY

How do you make sure the people you have running your teams know how to do that? I was never taught that when I ran teams. I had to figure it out.

Each person is in an entirely different stage of mental fitness where, who knows what’s going on in their life, who knows what going on in their job? So to set everyone on their own personal tracks gets us to high-performing teams– because then they’re healthy and they’re fit and they’re working better with their teams.

WarnerMedia

A

PROBLEM
Portfolio of media brands Warner Bros, HBO, CNN, TBS, etc.
New CEO and reorged all businesses
+ shifting to a direct-to-consumer model.
The whole industry was changing, plus their company.

Coaching was in their leadership development model, but they hadn’t coached their leaders on HOW to be great leaders.

SOLUTION
Worked with BU
Set up a pool of dedicated coaches briefed on the WarnerMedia competency framework.
We mapped our Whole Person Model to their Culture Framework.
Offered to a group of 600 managers (nominated by HRBP).
Each person was offered unlimited 1:1 coaching for 6 months with a primary coach plus access to specialized coaching.

To unpack that a little - Ask questions, listen actively, lead with empathy, be more insightful
Tools and techniques to move from a negative mindset to learning how to cope and thrive and be more resilient in the face of change and bring it to their teams as well.
Perform at their best, and recognize when they’re stuck and need help.

IMPACT
Build upon their coaching culture (+17%),
it’s helping their leaders become more resilient and make connections across the company.
70% of surveyed users felt that their sessions were life-changing or amazing. 91% of coachee managers saw improvements in “Aligning others around a clear strategy.”
79% saw improvements in “building relationships and internal partnerships.”
It’s these kinds of results that really drive systemic change–and allow them to adapt in a rapidly changing industry.

manage their complex schedules, balance work and home life, self-awareness, and ability to manage their well-being. One member indicated they are “more confident in showing my whole self at work and voicing my perspective, even when it may not be a popular perspective.”

NETAPP

A

CHALLENGE
cloud data services and data management company with 10,000 employees. Their market is highly competitive for products but also for talent,
Data showed they needed help creating alignment across teams to drive growth as they shift to becoming a cloud-centric company.

Really the most agile time they have ever had to react to
Scalability. They did not know how people wanted to learn in their specific way in their specific country, in their language, but coaches did
They needed their managers to have a leadership mindset.

Their Head of Talent Larry McCalister had received BU at another company and knew it as the best way to address personal, professional, business and team work. The power of 1000 individuals doing their own thing to get better.

IMPACT

They learned is that what drives business success is giving people the help they need to feel healthy & inspired, handle their own problems, and reach across the aisle.
Connected to high performance and love that every employee can have their needs addressed directly. healthy, inspired, and able to handle their own problems. And that’s what drives business success.

They saw a shift in energy and people busting across silos to help each other. Employee decisions, development plans, talking about their own careers. Retention - They care more about their career at NetApp, they want to stay here, they want to grow here. and hear things like “I had a death in the family and was able to handle it better because of my coach”

and they will tell you this was the ONLY way they could offer personalized, custom development for people in their own language. They also really loved the fact that the global team could get matched with a coach in their own country, in their own language. The ones who came through most successfully and faster had a leadership mindset via coaching

VMWARE DEIB

A

When you have people coming from different backgrounds spread out by location tasked with innovation and need to be agile, and it starts with making them feel like you are investing in them, they can bring their whole selves to work, they belong, and they have value. They found that just having ERGs wasn’t enough to make an impact business-wise. Not only did they have business objectives, but they also had a commitment to DEIB

Implementing BetterUp coaching, gave them the opportunity to grow as leaders and gave them the tools to be successful. could be something as small as how to have difficult conversations with someone who has a very different pov and ideas. How to make sure your voice is still heard. How to build trust and share common values with people from diverse backgrounds

WORKDAY

A

CHALLENGE
Rapid growth, increasing headcount by more than 30% over the last 5 years. Because they make software for human resources management, they’re also committed to being a great place to work for their own employees.
Management was noticing that as the company grew, the strengths of its values-driven culture were starting to dilute.
People were being promoted quickly, the company was hiring managers from the outside.
They needed to make sure that newly-promoted managers had the skills to lead, while the newly hired ones could adapt to Workday’s culture.

THE SOLUTION
Partnered with BetterUp to launch a coaching program for managers that would help them address three key objectives:
1) Build high-trust team environments.
2) enable managers to provide career growth for direct reports
3) reverse early signs of cultural dilution.

IMPACT
Nearly all those who received coaching said that BetterUp was a valuable use of their time, and that their coach helped them make meaningful progress toward their goals.
Workday employees already scored higher than BetterUp’s benchmarks on things like agility, awareness, and centeredness–and BetterUp helped them improve even more in those areas.

In 2022, Workday plans to increase its workforce by 20%. They were Glassdoor Best Place to Work in 2021. You can be sure that BetterUp coaching for managers is helping maintain their culture even as they grow.

Q

BP

A

CHALLENGE
Global energy company on a mission to reimagine energy
Traditionally known as an oil & gas conglomerate has set its sights on going green - and becoming net zero by 2050.

This shift to more technology-focused and agile requires the organization to change the way its people think, collaborate, and problem solve.

BP uses BetterUp to accelerate this culture shift.

Historically providing coaching to just its high-potential leaders and managers, the organization has tapped BetterUp to bring mindset and behavior change to a much broader swath of front-line managers.
Using Identify AI, BP is able to pinpoint which of their people need what type of coaching and resources,

As a result, BP has been able to move the needle on the specific dimensions of feedback that will enable them to make this culture change, in addition to increasing productivity, inclusion, and resilience.
BP is developing a culture of feedback and empowerment – to a culture of coaching, rather than command and control.
