current events: sex workers and #metoo Flashcards
1
Q
sex workers, men and me too
A
sex workers have 45-75% rate of sexual assault but seriously underrepresented in the movement
2
Q
reasons for them being discounted in the movement
A
assumption that they can’t be assaulted sexually bc of their career “you’re just a whore anyway and how can you assault a whore”
- sex workers asking for it by nature of their job
- not a “perfect victim”
- cultural amnesia
3
Q
media barriers to them being counted in the movement
A
- lack of media attention and support for their cause
example: male sex worker (zayn) rape survivor who shared his story, felt he wasn’t believed both bc hes a SW and a man
4
Q
-prosecution barrier
A
- inability of SW to speak out due to fear of prosecution
- Nisha Powell, burlesque dancer
- 2017, at least 40 sex workers killed
- police profile SWs (give random reasons for why they’re accusing them), so SW don’t trust them when they’ve been assaulted
- domestic violence AND rape considered to be “trick gone bad” by police, something they brought upon themselves
