Instillation of Hope
by observing progress of others in the group, members build hope that their problems could be solved
imparting information
group members share knowledge with each other, leader teaches groups to provide information (teacher teaches us)
universality
individuals come to realize they are not alone in their thoughts
altruism
members provide assistance and support for each other which, in turn creates a positive self image
catharsis
within a group members are able to express both positive and negative feelings (sporting event)
development of socializing skills
members learn new social skills based on feedback of others
interpersonal learning
the group offers many and varied opportunities for interacting with other people
imitative behavior
members may copy behavior from the leader or peers and can adopt healthier habits
corrective recapitulation of the primary family group
group members are able to reexperience family problems that remain unresolved
existential factors
members learn to accept painful aspects of life that affect everyone (death, loneliness)
cohesiveness
arises in a mature group when each member feels connected to other members, they can accept positive feedback and constructive critisism
Group Therapy Preferred
- client needs to develop
- client’s problems are related to ineffective social skills/feelings of isolation/or lonliness
- client finds peer support/feedback beneficial
- prefers to get involved in counseling slowly
- problems related to stress, marital difficulties, academic performace, or difficulties in expressing dependence, love, or assertiveness
Individual Therapy Preferred
- client state of crisis
- limited awareness of his/her behaviors, feelings, motivations
- need for recognition and attention is so great that it would disrupt the group
- extremely fearful of speaking in front of others
- client’s problem invovles depression, anger, withdrawal, deviant sexual behavior, paranoia, lack of contact with reality, brain damage, hypochondria, sociopathy, narcissim, drug/alcohol abuse (some therapists belive that clients with depression or alcohol/drug abuse are appropriate for group/individual therapy combined
