  • Culture shock sets in before you even leave your country with stress and uncertainty.
  • This is a very stressful experience especially for people from an individual, dominating-over-nature culture.

  • You feel like you have failed in some way, you are angry and insecure
  • Culture shock is good because it shows that you are in the process of learning a new culture.

A
  • Do things that make you happy.
  • If you feel like complaining only complain to non-local friends, because locals may feel attacked and hurt.
  • When you are ready start practicing frame of reference shifting.

  • Follows a similar pattern as culture shock. It is often shorter, but more intense.

  • The adaptation process is seen as a spiral, where every new experience adds to personal growth.
  • Whenever you face a situation or transition to a new environment where your established cultural patterns don’t work, you will likely experience some level of stress and confusion.
  • These feelings can initially provoke defensive responses, where you may try to keep your existing habits and reject the new culture.
  • With time and some effort, you begin to accommodate to the new environment, leading to adaptation and growth.
