Explain the term culture
Culture is all things learnt and shared by a group or society of people that is transmitted from generation to generation through socialisation, for example: accents, traditional holidays, food (cultural transmission). Cultural universals like food or celebrations can be taught/socialised at home by parents, primary socialisation. Boas In 1996 found that cultures are different but equal so norms for some cultures can be viewed as offensive or rude to others EG: eating with your hands.
What is material culture and non-material culture
Material culture refers to the physical things people attach emotional meaning to eg: clothes (football tops).
Non-material culture refers to traditions people share eg language, it’s important as it helps people understand their social world and gives guidelines on how to behave
