Q

What is a beanpole family

A

A Beanpole family is a multi-generational family that is long and thin with few aunts, uncles and grandparents.

  • In the past, families often had many children so there would have shown a triangular shape
  • Modern family trees are longer and thinner. There are fewer people in each generation, but they live longer in each generation but they live longer. The beanpole family is a family type described by Brennan 2003 as long and thin

Q

What are the reasons for beanpole families

A

With liberation of women, they are having less children as there’s an older starting age so there’s higher infant mortality rate as people are putting work first and there is more contraceptions

Higher divorce rates create more single parents and step families therefore changes the traditional family structure

Cost of living and mortgage rates are going up so more debt and cost of children is higher and living rates

Life expectancy is rising so people will have less children as we have an aging population and as age rises fertility rate decreases. 30% of the Uk population are grandparents and will remain so for an average of 25 years this was found by Harper in 2005. Expectancy is rising as advances in medicine and advancing welfare state (social security)
