What does a mediated experience mean?
People don’t live in direct contact but through shared meanings provided by culture

deliberately disrupting social norms
What is cultural relativism?
Assessing a culture by its own standards not yours
What is a value?
A standard for what is true, good, just, or beautiful

What are sanctions?
Form of social control to encourage conformity
What are folkways?
Informal norms not strictly enforced
What are mores?
Norms that represent a community’s most important values
What is the Sapir-Wolf Hypothesis?
The structure of a language impacts speaker’s perception of experience
What are some examples of a subculture?
Biker gangs, ethnic groups, AA, churches, clubs
What is counter culture?
Reject larger culture’s norms
What is diffusion?
The spread of material and nonmaterial culture
