Culture
These refer to everything a person owns or uses to the place where he/she lives.
Material Objects
These refer to the way people think and what principles and values they adhere to.
Ideals, Values, and Attitudes
According to Diana R. Agbayani and Yolanda M. Meru (2016), it is comprised of what we have been taught about our society.
Culture
A discipline that studies communication across different cultures and social groups; defined as situated between individuals and groups of different linguistic and cultural origins. (Chiongson, J., et al, 2016)
Intercultural Communication
This pertains to the cultural norms on behavior that each society abides.
Expected Patterns of Behavior
(Blocks to intercultural communication) This refers to the inability to accept another culture’s world view.
Ex. “In my country, things are much better!”
Ethnocentrism
(Blocks to intercultural communication) This refers to generalizing about a person while ignoring the presence of individual difference.
Example:
In 2017, the Maute group placed Marawi in a state of siege. Since then, some people would label Muslims as terrorists.
Stereotyping
(Blocks to intercultural communication) This refers to ignoring differences and one proceeds as though differences did not exist.
Cultural blindness
(Blocks to intercultural communication) This happens when formal tone change becomes embarrassing and off-putting in some cultures.
Example:
In one culture, people’s normal speaking tone is in high pitch while for other cultures, it is rude.
Tone Difference
(Blocks to intercultural communication) This refers to too much anxiety or tension requires
some form of relief which too often comes in the form of defences, such as the skewing of perceptions,
withdrawal, or hostility.
High Anxiety
(Blocks to intercultural communication) People from different cultures inhabit different sensory
realities.
Examples:
In Ghana, if a young child looks an adult in the eye, it is
considered an act of defiance
Nonverbal misinterpretations

actions of the other person or group rather than to try
to comprehend completely the thoughts and feelings
expressed from the world view of the other.
Tendency to Evaluate
(Blocks to intercultural communication) A word/slang/idiom in one culture may mean differently
to another.
Example:
In Mindanao, langgam means bird, while in Luzon,
langgam means ants.
Language Differences
(Blocks to intercultural communication) This refers to the belief that everyone should conform to the majority.
Example:
When the Spaniards came to the Philippines, Filipinos
were pagans but then, the Spaniards imposed Catholicism to them.
