Cultural Transmission Flashcards
What are two examples of not cultural transmission?
- Local Enhancement. 2. Social Facilitation.
What did the Capuchin foraging example show about local enhancement and social facilitation?
Social facilitation did not occur, but local enhancement did.
What is social facilitation?
The model(s) do not have to be active but are drawn to the social group e.g. safety in numbers.
What is local enhancement?
Individual drawn to an area because there is another individual (a model) in that location that is active. The observer may then learn on its own that there is food there.
Is social or observational learning a type of cultural transmission?
Yes.
What are the two types of social or observational learning?
- Imitation. 2. Copying.
What is imitation?
Acquisition of a topographically novel response through observation of a demonstrator making that response.
What is copying?
Observer repeats the action of the demonstrator. Not novel behavior.
