cultural differences Flashcards
Members of different cultures vary in their stress responses. The sources of variation include?
1) types of stressor they are exposed to,
2) the way they perceive stressors,
3) the responses they produce to stressors and
4) the way they attempt to cope with them.
Koenig (2009)
90% of Americans coped with the stress of September 11 (2001) by turning to religion.
People who used positive religious coping displayed greater optimism and less anxiety three months after the attacks. The underlying assumption is that religion is more than a defence
mechanism as it was viewed by Sigmund Freud.
Gloria Luong (n.d.)
investigated how Chinese Americans and European Americans choose different coping strategies in response to a social conflict stressor that may either pay off immediately or in
the long run.
Chinese Americans were more likely to choose strategies that made them feel better at the moment by seeking supportive
responses from their conflict partner. In contrast, European Americans were more likely to confront their conflict partners, allowed European Americans to look back on the event in a more positive light one week later than Chinese Americans.
