As the way parents communicate with their children affects their cognitive development and their ability to benefit from schooling

Context free - doesn’t assume listener shares same experiences

A belief in fate- whatever will be will be and there’s nothing you can do to change your status
That you can change your position through your own efforts
What is collectivism?

Valuing being part of a group more than succeeding as an individual
Individuals should not be held back by group loyalties
What is immediate gratification?
What do the middle class believe?
Seeking pleasure now rather than making sacrifices in order to get rewards in the future
Emphasise deferred gratification- making sacrifices now for greater rewards later
What is present time orientation?
What do the middle class believe?
Seeing the present as more important than the future and so not having long term plans/goals
Have future-time orientation that sees planning for the future as important
