The New Right Flashcards
What is neoliberalism?
The belief that the government need to encourage competition and should not try to regulate the economy
What is the new right perspective?
The belief that the state cannot meet people’s needs and that people are best left to meet their own needs through the free market
How is the new right different to functionalism
The new right believe the current education system is not achieving its goals
Functionalism believe it is
What are the differences between the functionalist aims and the new right aims?
They have the same aims for education however the new right don’t think it’s currently being achieved
Why has the new right been criticized?
Because people argue that state control is not the real cause of low educational standards, instead it is social inequality and inadequate funding
What is Chubb and Moe’s argument?
That state education has failed and it needs to be put in the hands of the consumer to meet their needs
Why do Chubb and moe believe state education is not delivering a high quality of education?
Because they are not answerable to a paying consumer so they don’t have to listen to their wishes
What do Chubb and moe believe state education has failed to produce?
Students with skills needed by the economy
What did Chubb and Moe want to introduce?
A market system in state education that would put the control in the hands of the consumers (parents)
How would Chubb and Moe implement the market system?
By proposing a system where each family would be given a voucher to spend on buying education from a school of their choice
How would giving parents a voucher improve the education system?
It would force schools to become more responsive to parents wishes as the voucher would be their main source of income
