acknowledgement and incorporation of the importance of culture in practice

belief that one’s own culture is superior to others and is the standard by which other cultures should be judged

stresses variability of culture, emphasizes need to understand other cultures in their own context

recognition of cultural difference with recognition of system weakness
what is cultural competence?
acceptance and respect for differences, continuing self-assessment, vigilance toward dynamics of differences, on-going expansion of knowledge and adaptation of services
what is cultural proficiency?
culture is held in high regard (research, dissemination of results, development of new approaches)

capacity for cultural self-awareness

what are social determinants of health?
conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system
these circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power, and resources at global, national and local levels, which are themselves influenced by policy choices.
The social determinants of health are mostly responsible for health inequities- the unfair and avoidable differences in health status seen within and between countries
what are policy issues?
strengthen national efforts and coordination of health services
require implementation of CLAS standards
increase the diversity of health care professionals
collect data, improve monitoring, research to identify sources of racial, ethnic and geographic disparitites
