What are essential elements for the nurse to plan to address to be able to deliver culturally competent care?
The nurse should always determine the clients health preferences to create an individualized plan of care. Healthcare providers must have awareness of their own beliefs and values, as well as being aware that others whole different values and beliefs based on personal preferences for ethnic, cultural, and racial backgrounds. Recognizing one’s own biases and respecting all people despite differences can influence satisfaction and care. It is imperative for healthcare providers to understand that cultural groups sure Dominic characteristics, However, subcultures exist and stereotyping must be avoided. It is not within the nurses roll to diagnose health conditions
Health Disparities
Healthcare disparities our differences in healthcare offered two different groups of people
Homelessness patients
These patient will require close follow up as much as possible
Care should include health maintenance, attention to common problems and concerns and establishing an emergency contact person if available
These people tend to have longer hospital stays in poor health outcomes
They tend to have limited access to healthcare, problems getting enough food, difficulty staying safe, unsanitary living conditions, exposure to extremes in weather.
Common health problems are: Dental problems, Malnutrition, STD, HIV, AIDS, lung diseases, mental health problems, substance abuse, wound and skin infection, infectious and communicable diseases
Socioeconomically disadvantaged families
They are at higher risk for chronic diseases and any diseases associated with primary prevention
Always carefully assess patient for at risk behaviors and intervening appropriately including providing education

Intellectually disabled patient
These people may have a hard time recalling their health history, So take more time to ask questions in a variety of different ways
Always keep watch of these patients as they tend to eat quickly and they could be at risk for choking or aspiration
Safety is a priority, ensure they have a safe environment
Functional behavior assessment is important in identifying existing health problems
Health interventions must be focused on treating a medical condition followed by behavioral intervention to prevent continued behavioral response to an illness
Victims of abuse or neglect
The health effects of abuse are bruises, sprains, broken bones, chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle tension, involuntary shaking, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, fertility issues
They can experience mental health issues including PTSD, nightmares, anxiety, uncontrollable thoughts, depression, low self-esteem, alcohol and drug abuse
Feeling of hopelessness, lack of motivation, and ability to trust others and lack of motivation is common
Healthcare considerations : Safety is a priority, make sure they have a safe environment in which to live in, provide contact information for seeking a safe haven if necessary
Nurses are mandated to report domestic violence and abuse incidents, may be necessary to take photographs of injuries for legal reasons
Nurses can provide parental education and support programs to patients
