Cultural Bias: Evaluate Flashcards
Consequences of cultural bias:
Gould (1981)
found that the US Army IQ test led to enduring stereotypes concerning certain ethnic groups and their IQ.
Bias in research methods:
Sears (1986)
Henrich et al. (2010)
S: reported that 82% of research studies used undergraduates and 51% were psychology students.
H: found that a randomly selected American student was 4,000 times more likely to be a participant in a psych study than a non westerner. Being male, MC, academic and young
Indigenous psychologies:
One way to counter ethnocentrism is to encourage indigenous psychology which is the development of different theories in different countries
For instance, Afrocentrism refers to psychological theories concerning black people and African values arguing that European values aren’t universally appropriate
The emic-etic approach
And Emic approach is one that emphasises the uniqueness of every culture by focusing on culturally specific phenomena
And Etic approach is one that seeks universals of behaviour, in order to achieve this and avoid cultural bias is to use indigenous researchers in each cultural setting
