Cultural Bias Flashcards
Outline- culture bias
A tendency to ignore cultural differences and interpret everything through the lens of one culture!
Things are different in different cultures
Outline- Ethnocentrism
Judging one culture by another as if one is superior to another.
- Ainsworth’s strange situation was criticised for this as she reflected on only the norms and values of American culture
Outline- cultural relativism
The idea that norm are values are only meaningful in the culture they exist and the right social context.
Outline- Berry (1969) Etic and emic
Etic- looks at behaviour from outside a culture and attempts the universal behaviours.
Emic- identifies behaviours that are specific to one culture.
Evaluation- individualism and collectivism
It doesn’t account for differences in types of culture.
Individualism- care about the individual more
Collectivism- cares more about the whole most.
Osaka (1999)- found 14/15 studies that compared USA to Japan showed no signs of recognising the differences in culture.
Evaluation- unfamiliarity with research tradition
When studying cultures that aren’t accustomed to being studied on, may lead to demand characteristics which affects the validity of findings.
