All require proper communication and assesment of the patient.

What is culture?
A
“the accumulated store of shared values, ideas, understandings, symbols, material products, and practices of a group of people.”
Note: This definition does NOT include language

What is cultural competency?
A
- An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures
- It means paying attention to all factors that might influence the behavior of another person
- religion, food, beliefs, greetings, etc.
Cultural competence means treating other as they want to be treated

A
- Knowledgable about cultural differences and their impact on attitudes and behaviors
- Sensitive, understanding and respectful is dealings with peoples whose culture is different from one’s own
- Flexible and skillful in responding and adapting to different cultural contexts and circumstances

Interpreter vs. Translator
A
- Both transmit meaning for meaning
- An interpreter is used for spoken communication
- A translator is used for written communications

A
- poor communication

- confusing or overwhelming
- didn’t know how the medication workds

- ex: gelatin (pork product)

- believes Western medicine is too strong or wants to try traditional remedies first

A
- Really common in refugees
- Things that might retrigger memories
- waiting in line
- asking them to diet
- MRI, EKG
- Torture is pseudo-medical by nature
- administration of drugs

- forced IUD placement
- Symptoms of torture might be similar to those for depression or other mental illnesses.
- did the physician get the correct diagnosis?
- pain may be related to torture and medication may not help
