What is cultural anthro
Study of humans in different cultural settings, around the world both past and present
Culture
Total system of ideas, values, behaviour and attitudes of a society commonly shared by most members
Ethnology
Studies origins and cultures of different races of people, eg marriage customs, religion, art, tech, kinship patterns
Kinship
Relationship between 2 or more people based on common ancestors, eg siblings
Participant observation
Careful watching of a group, in some cases living with members and participating in their culture
Ethnography
Written account of a culture
Linguistic anthropology, 3 areas?
Study history and structure of language and ways humans use languages
3 areas? Historical linguistics, structural linguistics, sociolinguistics
Archaeology
Study physical remains of past culture through excavation and reconstruction
Work w historians, physical and cultural anthropology’s to make sense of past
Ethnocentrism
tendency to judge other cultures by one’s own values. ethnocentric view is to look at another culture as strange/inferior
Cultural relativism
Attitude of respect and acceptance of other cultures
What’s the major goal of cultural anthro
Combat ethnocentric views and respect other cultures
Rite of passage
Ceremony, ritual or event that marks change in life status eg birth adolescence, marriage death
3 stage process?
Segregation: remove themse,f from society and change in geological or physical appearance
Transition: change from what u we’re to something new, includes learning instructing, guidance from mentors eg driver’s lisence
Incorporation and reintegration: readmitted into society as new person, eg tattoos, scars, new clothes ring etc
Make rite of passages
Indicate transformation from child to adult, more common than female and more painful eg circumsitin
Female rite of passage
Often involves test of strength and physical or emotional hardship, transition from childhood is around menstruation.
