Anthropology Flashcards

1
Q

What is anthro?

A

Scientific study of the origin, behaviour, physical and social and cultural development of humans. Seeks what makes us human by studying our ancestors and living cultures

Q

Paleoanthro

A

study of bone and stone of ancient ancestors, evidence is based from distant evolutionary. Evidence can be skeletal remains, ancient tools, animal bones.

Q

Explain key points about why Lucy is important?

A
  • 3.2 million year old skeleton found 40% complete
-first transition from 4 to 2 legs, found in 1974 in Ethiopia
-pelvis indicates she walked upright and how tall she was and her weight
-teeth signified her age, as the adult teeth were coming in
-skull identified brain size which was smaller than avg human and same as a chimp

Q

Who was Charles Darwin

A

He made the natural selection which explained how animals and plants evolved. It proposed species were forced to evolve or they would go extinct, if they were able to adapt they would pass on the characteristics.

13
Q

What are differences between humans and other primates?

A

Primates adapt to bipedalism, we can walk for longer distances while doing tasks

  • longest infant dependency period
    -only primates w spoken language
-our brains, we develop ideas, reflect on behaviour, and hv sense of morality and spirituality

Q

What is human variation

A

Study of genetic differences btw ppl and populations, understands differences from evolutionary perspectives

Question eg; are humans evolving to not habe wisdom teeth

16
Q

Environmental fitness

A

Part of human variation

Individuals better adapted to environment will provide more offspring and pass traits,

17
Q

Biological anthro

A

How diseases and illnesses are genetically transmitted, how they r caused by the environment

18
Q

Forensic anthro

A

Clues found in physical injuries, wear of bones or teeth, DNA analysis, investigations to help solve crimes. (Basically work dead bodies)

19
Q

Why are fires important

A

Hominids can gather around and socialize, cook food, provide warmth comfort, and practice survival skills
