Cuban revolution 1959
Fidel overthrows Batista. Reforms are proposed to improve the economy of Cuba and end exploitation Cuban population. Signs trade agreement with Russia. Appointed communists to his government.
Back ground
USA had played a major part in Cuban affairs. USA invested heavily in Cuban agricultural industry. Had put Batista in charge to protect Americas interests. America had naval base in Cuba. Unpopular with Cuban people.
USA retaliation to revolution
1960 USA stopped buying sugar from Cuba then later that year banned all trade with Cuba. Broke off diplomatic relations. Economic sanctions. Hoped this would starve Castro into submission. Castro moved closer to the Soviet Union.
Bay of pigs
JFK and CIA train and equip Cuban excites to retake Cuba. They believed they would have the support of the Cuban people. Massive disaster and Kennedy is humiliated.
Consequences of the invasion
Castro even closer to the soviets. Khrushchev provides arms and training for Cuban military. In July 1961 Castro nationalized all American industries. Ussr and Cuba sign a treaty.
Blockade
Cubans began building missile sites. Fleet of soviet ships on their way to what Kennedy thought to be missiles to Cuba. America blockaded Cuba. Kennedy won as Khrushchev said if America removed the blockade the soviets would remove missiles. Second letter said that Americans must remove missiles from turkey.
Aftermath
Kennedy emerged victor. Removal of turkey missiles were kept widely a secret. A direct hot line between Kennedy and Khrushchev was set up. Soviets politicians were not happy at Khrushchev backing down. Humiliating for Russia. Khrushchev looked weak and Kennedy looked strong. Cuba remained communist in Americas back yard and Castro also still controlled Cuban companies.
