Paved the way for the civil rights movement in the 50’s. Unites nations put pressure on America. Non segregated army. Truman trying to help blacks.
Civil rights in the 50’s
Segregation. Enforced by Jim Crow laws. Literacy test, only those who passed it could vote. Unable to change position because many blacks could not vote. Poor education and low paid jobs imprisoned blacks.
Brown vs Topeka
First legal win for blacks. Outlaws separate but equal. NAACP gains support. Confidence for blacks. Little change in integrated schools by 1961. Federal disinterest to enforce it.
Montgomery
Mass campaign to tackle discrimination. Victory. MLK gains popularity. NAACP gains more support. Rosa parks unites community. Publicity and no violence used.
Little rock
Federal involvement to protect rights. Media and publicity. White resistance still. Using brown vs Topeka president. Ike support. Victory.
For MLK
Seeks integration through non violence. many northern whites support him- Washington March. Promotes interracial communities. Accepted as the leader of the movement. Birmingham, media, president, bull Connor.
Against MLK
Slow pace of movement frustrates young men. Doesn’t change day to day discrimination.
For Malcolm x
Gives confidence to confront racism, black power is promoted and gains supporters. Violence for defense keeps civil rights on the agenda.
Against Malcolm x
Divides civil rights movement. Loses federal support. Unpopular among white people. Slows movement down.
What did Johnson do?
Great society speech. Signed the civil rights act on 1964. He passed the voting rights act in 1965 which ended the literacy test. However riots in 1968.
What did Kennedy do?
1962 he made as peach nationwide committing himself to civil rights. He made high level black appointments. Forces southern states to defend freedom riders. James Meredith and the university of Mississippi, send troops to let him in.
