A student in the first year of high school or college / university. In college this student is working to complete 30 credits.
Freshman
A student in the second year of high school or college / university. In college this student has completed 30 credits and is working to complete 60 credits.
Sophomore
A student in the third year of high school or college / university. In college this student has completed 60 credits and is working to complete 90 credits.
Junior
A student in the fourth year of high school or college / university. In college this student has completed 90 credits and is working to complete 120 credits.
Senior
A school’s teaching and administrative staff who is responsible for designing programs of study.
Faculty
A member of a school’s faculty who provides advice and guidance to students on academic matters, such as course selections.
Academic adviser
The college or university official who is responsible for registering students and keeping their academic records, such as transcripts.
Registrar
The senior academic officer of a college or university who typically oversees all academic policies and curriculum-related matters.
Provost
The head of a division of a college or university.
Dean
A status offered to high-level faculty members at a college or university that allows them to stay permanently in their positions, after demonstrating a strong record of teaching and published research.
Tenure
A graduate student who assists a professor with teaching an undergraduate course, usually within his or her field.
Teaching assistant (TA)
A student leader who works in campus dormitories and supervises issues and activities related to dorm life. They often receive free housing in the dorm in return for their services.
Resident assistant (RA)
A listing of students who have achieved at least a 3.5 (B+) on a 4.0 scale. This achievement may vary from college to college, but generally speaking comprises of students in the top 5 percent.
Dean’s List
A full professor is someone who has been in the profession for a long time and usually holds a doctorate degree.
Professor
Responsible for the day-to-day workings of the college. Usually people in admissions, financial aid, the book store, housing, and student activities.
