Corporate social responsibility is the continuing commitment of a business to operate in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable matter. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) takes into account an approach that is both ethical and socially responsible. And expressed his concern for how its practices affects the environment and society’s health and welfare, ethical concern for a workforce and refers to practices that go beyond what is likely required.
Considering employees and CSR
Managers can consider employees by promoting their wellbeing during periods of business change. Business change can lead to employees having their roles changed abruptly, losing their jobs and wages. In most cases, an employee’s financial and job status impacts their families, which can lead to increased levels of stress and fear. Therefore, managers should take into account how business change may impact the social and mental wellbeing of employees.
- providing extra training and support when adapting to new practices
- engaging in 2 way communication to help reduce misunderstandings
- speak openly and honestly with employees who are feeling anxious due to change
Considering the general community and CSR
Businesses can consider the general community by reducing or eliminating practices which are detrimental to society. The general community can face low employment rates and economic activity as a result of certain business changes. When more people are unemployed, levels of crime and poverty in society generally increase. Therefore, it is vital that businesses conduct their practices in a socially responsible and ethical manner so the general community continues developing.
- choosing local suppliers to create employment opportunities and improve the local economy
- redeploying employees to other areas of the business to minimise unemployment rates
- sourcing materials from businesses that provide employees with fair pay and working conditions
Considering the environment and CSR
Businesses can consider the environment by reducing the negative impacts of their practices on the planet. Serious and irreversible harm to the environment can be a result of unethical business practices. Therefore, it is vital that businesses conduct their practices in an environmentally responsible way to preserve the environment. In response, customers and employees are more likely to buy and work for businesses that demonstrate CSR for the environment
- Purchasing accurate technology which reduces the number of errors that occur during production can minimise the businesses amount of waste.
- Choosing a local supplier to reduce the amount of carbon emissions produced during transportation
- building a facility which creates minimal pollution during construction and has a minimal impact impact on local wildlife
Advantages and disadvantages of CSR consideration
Advantages
• Can develop a good brand reputation which leads to more customers purchasing goods or services
• May attract highly skilled employees who value ethical conduct and I committed to meeting objectives
• Employees usually prefer to work for businesses who have ethical practices
• Customers are willing to pay more for ethically produced goods or services
Disadvantages
• A constant focus on CSR may decrease productivity levels
• It can be time-consuming to address various CSR considerations
• CSR practices can be expensive for a business to implement
