CSIM1.83 Development And Perinatal Pathology Flashcards
What is the name of Trisomy 21 Trisomy 18 Trisomy 13 XXY 45X XXX
Downs Edwards Patau Klinfelters Turners Triple X
What is the relationship between fetal growth restriction and adult disease?
restricted babies, babies born with low birth weight have been found to be more susceptible to adult diseases like t2dm, CHD, hypertension, obesity.
What is the definition of an embryo
Conception to 11 weeks after LMP (or 8 weeks gestation)
What is the definition of still birth?
Death of fetus after 24 weeks
What is the definition of neonatal death
Death within 28 days of birth
What is early neonatal death
Within 1st week of birth
Definition of infant death
Within 1st year
Why is implantation key in survival of fetus
Because maternal immune system has to allow fetus to live for implantation to occur. After implantation, survival goes up.
Why is the 20 week anomaly scan important?
Most organs are formed by 20 weeks, scan is to check for major defects.
Why is the kidney important in fetal development?
Kidney produces amniotic fluid which is passed out as urine.
Fetus need amniotic fluid to be bathed in and allows to move around (MSK). Baby ingests and inhales amniotic fluid through the lung, expanding the lung and exercising it, aiding in development. If baby does not receive or make enough amniotic fluid, lungs will be underveloped and might lead to early neonatal death
What is a common cause of premature delivery?
Preterm premature rupture of placental membrane
Intrauterine infection
Structural abnormalities
> twins
What can prematurely born babies give rise to?
Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome
Necrotising enterocolities
Sepsis
What is the primary defect in neonatal respiratory distress syndrome
Deficiency in pulmonary surfactant - allows for lung expansion and immune system.
