CSF & VS Part 2 Flashcards
What are the functions of CSF?
1: it act as custion and protect the brain
2: supporting the Central nervous system and brain is well suspended due to just nervous and few vessels which are entering in and out
3: if during lumber puncture excessive amount of CsF is with drawn a person develops severe pain which can be treated by injecting normal saline sterile intrathically (mean through Dura mattar into Arachnide matter)
4: It act as reservoir and controls/ regulate intracranial content.
5: It act as nourishing fluid
6: CSF also act as vehicle to remove some of the waste products because neurons produce waste products which is present in interstitial fluid of brain and from there it can easily defuse into CSF.
7: CSF carry around the hormonal products in the CNS
Interstitial fluid…
Everything which is present in the blood is not going out because of endothelial cells present in the walls of thể arteries and veins. These cells are very tightly held together so they allow few substances to move into thề interstitial fluid of the brain.
But fluid from the CSF cẳn freely move and exchange with thề interstitial fluid of the brain. They both are in exchange relation so because of this reason they have same composition. Due to this reason the nutrients which are present in CSF can easily go into the interstitial fluid of the brain and nourish neurons.
Where is Pineal Gland present?
Pineal Gland is present in the back of 3rd ventricle of brain.
Features of CSF
1: volume: around 130ml
2: daily production of csf: 550 ml i.e: 0.5 ml/mint
3: pressure of CSF: 60-160 mm H2O
Which Structures are pierced during Lumber puncture?
Lumber puncture is done at the level of L4-L5 with the concent of the patient
Following structures are pierced during this process
1: Skin
2: Ligaments
i.e supra spinous
Inter spinous
Ligamentum flavum
3: epidural Space
4: Dura mater
5: subdural space
6: Arachenoid mater
7: sub arachenoid space + csf
Signs & symptoms of increased intracranial pressure
1: Headache ( if patients wake up and has unexplained headache )
2: papilladimia
3: projectile vomiting
4: progressively rising blood pressure
5: progressively decreasing pulse rate
