CSF Flashcards
1
Q
when is LP indicated?
A
headache infection inflammation/cancer of NS/MS/encephalitis subarach raised ICP
2
Q
cancer of CNS on LP
A
cancerous cells in CSF
high WCC
very low glucose
do cytology to confirm cancer cells
3
Q
GBS on LP
A
normal cell count + glucose
very high protein
4
Q
subarach on LP
A
high RBC (but not specific as can indicate traumatic tap) xanthochromia (bilirubin + oxyHb from blood breakdown) only sensitive after 12h till 2wk
5
Q
idiopathic intracranial HTN - symptoms + LP findings
A
headache constant + worse on bending
vision changes + papilloedema
high opening pressure
6
Q
MS - LP
A
oligoclonal bands of IgG not present in serum
indicates production of IgG within CNS
7
Q
bacterial meningitis - LP
A
everything high apart from glucose
neutrophils
8
Q
viral infection on LP eg herpes simplex encephalitis
A
modest increase in cells
lymphocytes
normal glucose
9
Q
TB - LP
A
everything very high - opening pressure, lymphocytes, protein
but very low glucose
