CSC1402 - Computing Flashcards
Command Line environment
A command line environment is a window in which the user can enter commands which tell the operating system to do something?
Application
An application is a program which users can run on a computer by means of the operating system.
Folders
Folders allow users to organise their files into groups, sub-groups, etc.
HTML: Head Element
The head element contains information about the web page which is not directly visible when the page is viewed in a browser.
Why do computers need to be shut down, rather than just turned off at the wall?
Because the operating system might need to copy some parts of files to disk, which have not yet been saved
Operating System
An operating system is the software which manages all activity on the computer
Why does my computer tell me that my 500 GByte disk has only 475 Gbytes of space for files?
The operating system needs to store quite a lot of information on the disk which it uses to manage the files.
Backup
A backup is a copy of a file or collection of files to another place.
What are the symptoms that your computer has a virus?
Any of the above, and possibly other behaviour which seems unusual and unaccountable.
Headers and footers should be used in most documents because:
All of the above.
b. They create a context in which the meaning of the document is placed, making the document easier to digest.
c. The can be used to remind the reader repeatedly what the document is about, and why they are reading it.
d. They create a frame around the document.
To modify a style you should:
Format some text the way you want it, then select update style to match selection by right-clicking on the style.
To see the internal characters of your document which appear as white space you need to:
Click on the backward P in the main icon bar
How can an MS Word document be set up to use different types of page numbers in different parts of the document.
Create a section break, then make the header or footer with the page number different from one section to the next.
The key to professional word-processing is:
The use of styles.
Flexible placement of images or text anywhere on a page:
is not normally desirable in word processing.
Using an automatically generated table of contents is good because
All of the above.
It can be arranged to provide hyperlinks to the actual sections in your document
It saves the effort of typing in the text of the table of contents
It stays consistent with your actual document
Turing is credited with
Introducing the first concepts of computer intelligence
b. All these answers are correct.
c. Identifying the essential features of a computer
d. Applying mechanical calculation to decryption of encrypted messages
What is the stored program architecture
Stored program architecture means that the computer can run different programs depending on which program is stored in its memory.
Charles Babbage’s contribution to computers was:
The design of a mechanical computer
The Mouse was invented by:
Douglas Englebart of Xerox corporation
Steve Wozniak was
Steve Wozniak was the other Steve who started Apple. (with Steve Jobs)
The original product of Microsoft was:
An interpreter for the Basic programming language
What is Moore’s law?
Moore’s law is that the total number of transistors on an integrated circuit has, and will continue, to double every 18 months for a considerable period of time.
The fundamental element from which electronic circuits are usually made is
a transistor
The Internet started as:
A US Defence Dept funded research project called ARPANET, in the late 1970’s.
How big are packets in the Internet?
Between 40 and 1500 bytes.
Putting all data into packets in the Internet makes is important because:
Packets are suitable for all the different communication services that we want to use, and hence the Internet can provide a very wide range of services
Webmail is:
A service where a server receives and sends email for you, allowing you to edit outgoing messages in a web browser, and display received messages in a web page
The basic protocols of the Internet are:
Internet protocol (IP), Unreliable Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
The World Wide Web is:
A collection of servers which are accessible using the http protocol via the Internet
In the context of the Internet, a protocol is:
A set of rules or patterns of communication which enable a pair of computers to complete a frequently needed task.
