Crustaceans - Arthropods Flashcards
What does ‘arthropod’ mean?
‘Jointed foot’.
What are the living sub-phyla of arthropod?
Crustacea; Chelicerata; Myriapoda; Hexapoda.
What is the main organic component of arthropod cuticle, besides protein?
Chitin.
What kind of skeleton do arthropods have?
Exoskeleton.
Why do crustacea have larger and faster-beating hearts than insects?
Because crustacea rely on blood to deliver oxygen from gills to body tissues. Insects deliver oxygen through tracheae, air-filled tubes.
What does metamorphosis mean?
Literally ‘change in form’. In arthropods, it refers to a change in body form from one phase of the life cycle to another – such as nauplius to zoea larva to adult crab; or caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly.
When did the trilobites live?
First in the Cambrian; extinct soon after start of Palaeozoic.
What kind of limbs do crustacea have (which distinguishes them from other Arthropods)?
Biramous – divided into 2.
How many antennae do crustacea have?
4 (2 pairs) – unlike insects, who have 1 pair. In crustacea, each antenna is biramous.
