Crustacea (lecture 13) Flashcards
What are the defining characteristics of the subphylum Crustacea?
Two pairs of antennae.
What are the head appendages that are consistent across Crustaceans?
One pair of mandibles and two pairs of maxillae.
Carapace
Part of the exoskeleton that extends ventrally from the back of the head.
Exopodite
The outside of the limb.
Endopodite
The part of the limb that branches on the inside.
How is the exoskeleton of crustaceans different to other arthropods?
- The epicuticle and procuticle contain calcium carbonate.
- The epicuticle is not waxy and waterproof.
- Often brightly pigmented.
Describe the Crustaceans respiratory system
- Breathe via gills.
- Closed gas exchange system.
- Oxygen is transported in haemolymph, or bound to haemoglobin or haemocyanin.
Name the classes within the subphylum crustacea
- Class Malacostraca.
- Class Maxillopoda.
- Class Cirripedia (barnacles).
Name two orders within the classes of crustacea
- Order Decapoda.
- Order Euphausiacea.
Give an example of organism from the order Decapoda
Freshwater crayfish (koura).
Give an example of an organism from the order Euphausiacea
Krill.
Uropods
The sixth and last pair of flattened appendages on organisms from the Class Malacostraca.
Pleopods
Biramous limbs protruding from the first five segments of an organism in the subphylum crustacea.
Chelipeds
The first pair of legs that bare large pincers.
Setae
Long fringe of hairs that are on the limbs of crustaceans.
Peduncle
The stalk of stalked barnacles.
Capitulum
The rest of a barnacle’s body.
