Wars that reclaimed Holy Land from Muslims 1096-1291
Specifically, Jerusalem
Main Goal: make Jerusalem a Christian City
Emperor of Byzantine was afraid of:
Muslims taking over
So he asked Pope Urban II for help
Pope called all warriors to unite and drive Muslims out
Effects of Crusades
- Trade increased
- Kings became more powerful because knights lost lives and lands
- Dislike for non-Christians became popular (negative effect on Europe’s Jewish popuation)
Origins of Black Death
came from fleas, rats and mice on board ships in Black Sea
Bubonic version
60% mortality
Giant bruises over entire body
Died in 7-14 days
Pneumonic version
90% mortality rate
Spread fast by sneezing, coughing, etc.
Died in 3-5 days
Aftermath
1/3 or 25 million dead in Europe
Responses to Plague
Infected people were isolated
People thought God was punishing and/or end of the world
Religious changes after Plague
Church lost power because people blamed God for not helping
Economic Changes
Large loss in labor force
High demand for higher wages
End of manorial system
People left rural areas to go to cities
