Alexis I (ruler of the Byzantine Empire)-feared Muslim Turks would destroy Constantinople and overthrow him; wanted to continue to be the emperor of the Byzantine empire Pope Urban II- saw an opportunity to increase his power and prestige

What did Pope Urban II urge the crusaders to do? What did he promise them ?

He urged them to take back what “rightfully” belonged to them; he promised them that their sins would be forgiven and they would go to heaven
