What were some of the causes of the Crusades?
Religious- Christians in Western Europe were not happy that Muslims controlled the Holy Land
Political/Military- the Byzantine Empire was under attack and Pope Urban II saw an opportunity
Psychological- the Council of Clermont inspired western christians to go fight
Why would a western knight join a crusade?
Religious- to recapture the Holy Land
Social- to escape violent, dirty, lawless Europe
Economic- to get rich (take land/booty)
Psychological/personal- to gain honor and glory
What were some of the effects of the crusades in Europe?
Political/Military- Kings in Europe gained more power and land because of many smaller rulers were killed on the crusades
Economic- trade increased between East and West
Social- (+) Knowledge of Muslim culture (“golden age”) spread throughout Europe and raised Western culture (-) Relations between Christians and Jews became increasingly strained; rise of “Anti-semitism”
