What were the crusades?
The Crusades were a series of religious wars undertaken in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries by the Roman Catholic Church to recapture the Holy land from Muslims.
What is Islam?
The Muslim religion that was founded by the Prophet Muhammad in Arabia in the 600’s
What is Christianity?
Christianity is the faith tradition that focuses on the figure of Jesus Christ.
Why did the Crusades take place?
To stop the expansion of Muslim states and for Christians to reclaim the Holy land in the Middle East.
Which Holy land did Christians want to recapture?
Jerusalem
When was the Holy land recaptures?
1099
First crusade:
It ran from 1097-1099. Its leaders included Robert of Normandy and Godfrey of Bouillon. Jerusalem was successfully recaptured in 1099 by Christians.
Which four states were set up?
Principalities of Antioch, Tripoli, county of Edessa, and Kingdom of Jerusalem.
Second Crusade:
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux called for the Second Crusade. It ran from 1147-1149 and was led by Louis VII of France and the Holy Roman Emperor, Conrad III. Second crusade was about responding to Muslims attack on Edessa
Third Crusade:
It ran from 1189-1192. England was mainly involved in the Third crusade under the leadership of Richard I. Saladin captured Jerusalem in 1187: Christendom ablaze with new calls for a Crusade.
Fourth Crusade:
From 1202-1204. The fourth crusade was originally intended to attack Egypt, which was the centre of Muslim power.
